What the Bible Teaches About Heaven

Heaven is one of those topics that fills us with wonder—and questions. What will heaven be like? Where exactly is it? And what does the Bible really say about it?

In his Hope Worth Having podcast series, Pastor Mike Sanders guides us through 2 Corinthians 12 and other Scriptures to bring clarity and comfort. Hearing what Paul experienced—theinexpressible vision of the “third heaven”—helps us understand that while our words fall short, God’s Word doesn’t. Unlike many modern books or testimonies, Paul’s vision wasn’t about fame or profit—he wanted to be faithful and truthful. That’s why our greatest source for understanding heaven is the Scriptures themselves.

Let’s explore six truths from God’s Word that will strengthen your hope:

1. Heaven Is Where God Dwells

Jesus began teaching us to pray, “Our Father, who is in heaven…” throughout the Bible, heaven is described as God’s throne room—where His presence is uniquely manifest. God reigns from heaven, hears our prayers, and is worshiped there. Though He is everywhere, heaven is His special dwelling place.

2. Heaven Is Where Angels Dwell

Jesus tells us that even the angels of children always behold the face of the Father in heaven (Matthew 18:10). These heavenly messengers brought word of Jesus’ birth, His resurrection, and they minister to believers today. Angels serve God’s purposes—but they are servants, not objects of worship.

3. Jesus Ascended—and Will Return from Heaven

After His resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven (Acts 1:9–11). He now intercedes for us at the Father’s right hand—and He’ll come again! Scripture promises a visible, victorious, and physical return:

“The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout… and the dead in Christ will rise… we will be caught up together… to meet the Lord in the air.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)

His return means accountability, reward, and reunion with loved ones—all powered by hope that sustains us now.

4. Heaven Is Home for Departed Believers

For Christians who’ve passed on, death is not a pause but a promotion. “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). The moment a believer breathes their last, they’re with Jesus. He has prepared a place for us—one free from sin, pain, and loss—and on that day, our bodies will be resurrected (John 14:2; Revelation 21:4).

5. Hope in Heaven Changes How We Live Today

The promise of heaven isn’t just a future comfort—it transforms our present. Trials become reminders of eternity. Worship becomes a taste of glory. Jesus says our hearts will be comforted and joy returned to us (John 16:20). Let heaven shape how you live, love, worship, and serve now.

6. Hold Tight to This Hope

When sorrow comes, remember—your loved one is more alive than ever. Death has been defeated by the risen Christ. One day, the trumpet will sound, and the redeemed will stand together—not to grieve, but to rejoice in the presence of God forever.
