Alexander Solzenitsyn wrote, “To destroy a people you must first sever their roots.” William O. Douglas, former Justice of Supreme Court said, “We are a religious people whose institutions presuppose a supreme being.” Anti-God philosophies and anti-Christian worldviews now clearly dominate most of Western society. As Christians we continue to face an onslaught of worldly philosophies.
America is more affluent than ever, and yet is more atheistic than ever. Political remedies are no cure for America’s spiritual problems. God’s blessings are not measured by material affluence. The Bible says, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12 KJV)
We are spiritual beings in a spiritual battle. If faith in God is diminished or absent we will fill the void with something else. What is needed is not merely moral or political reform, but spiritual regeneration. Laws cannot make people righteous. God’s people need to be transformed before America will be a great nation again.
The remedy to our nation’s moral and spiritual woes must begin at the house of God. (1 Peter 4:17 ESV) “For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God…” This is the one true hope for our nation. The late Vance Havner once said “America will improve when we have better Americans and the church will improve when we have better Christians.”
God’s people need to pray for repentance and revival among God’s people. Isaiah 57:15 (NASB) “For thus says the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, “I dwell on a high and holy place, And also with the contrite and lowly of spirit In order to revive the spirit of the lowly And to revive the heart of the contrite.” Why do we seek solutions to our problems so many other ways besides through prayer? I pray there will be revival in our country.
